Treatment of Sleep Apnea

Q. What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome? (OSAS)
A. Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome is a potentially life threatening disorder which is accompanied by a complete or partial cessation of breathing during sleep.

Q. Who treats sleep disorders?
A. Sleep disorders are usually treated by a qualified, experienced team of healthcare professionals including physicians who specialize in neurology, pediatrics, ENT, psychology, pulmonologists and dentists. The team should be part of a certified sleep center recognized by the Academy of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Greenberg is one of eleven people in the state of New Jersey, certified by the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and affiliated with the Hackensack Hospital and Palisades Hospital Sleep Disorders Center.

Q. What are symptoms of sleep apnea?
A. Although symptoms vary, the most common signs are loud snoring, daytime sleepiness at inappropriate times, disturbed sleep and frequent night time urinating.

Q. How does a dentist treat sleep apnea?
A. The Role of the dentist is to recognize the problem if the patient has not had previous treatment and refer the patient to the proper facility for evaluation. If the patient is diagnosed with OSAS, there are several modes of treatment. One treatment is a dental appliance which should be constructed by a dentist who is a member of the sleep disorder team and certified by the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.
